About John Roberts Design

Design That Informs, Inspires, and Endures

I’m John Roberts — a seasoned creative professional specializing in branding, graphic design, and web development. I help businesses communicate with clarity and style across print, digital, and interactive platforms. With deep experience in both traditional and modern media, I bridge the gap between thoughtful design and technical precision — creating work that not only looks great, but works great.

A Career Built on Experience

If you’ve explored my site, you’ve probably noticed: I’ve been in this business for quite a while. My portfolio reaches back to the 1990s, beginning with NetWare Connection Magazine, where I served as Creative Director.

What might not be as obvious is what my clients say about me. They describe me as dependable, enthusiastic, and consistently on target — someone who brings fresh, contemporary ideas to every project. They know I’m accessible, responsive, and that I manage projects exceptionally well. Some clients test the waters elsewhere, only to return and say, “We should have stayed with John from the start.” There’s real value in experience, and I’ve built my career on that.

Early Foundation in Design and Production

I began my design career in the world-class advertising agencies of Minneapolis, Minnesota. My background in graphic design and print technology gave me a unique edge: I didn’t just design for print — I understood how to get great results in print.

Typography, layout, and color theory were only part of the equation. The other half was production knowledge — knowing how ink, paper, and press technology could affect the final result. My early hands-on experience in newspaper and printing companies taught me that understanding both sides of the process made all the difference for clients.

Creative Direction in Publishing

After relocating to Utah, I joined the high-tech publishing world, working with Novell — a household name in the industry at the time. I began with LAN Times Magazine in production and later became Creative Director for NetWare Connection Magazine, where I spent many years leading design and production. My print background proved invaluable in maintaining both creative quality and technical precision across every issue.

Evolving with the Digital World

When the industry shifted online, I saw it as an opportunity — not a disruption. I dove into web design and development, quickly recognizing that the same principles of strong design still applied. The tools had changed, but the goal remained: to influence, inform, invite, and inspire.

User experience added new layers of complexity, but it also opened new possibilities. Today, I bring that blended perspective — the discipline of print, the interactivity of web, and the strategy of UX — to every project I take on.

Good Design Still Matters

Even in a digital world, print isn’t gone — not by a long shot. Product labeling, packaging, magazines, and books all rely on design that communicates clearly and elevates a brand. Styles come and go, but strong, timeless design always speaks well of the company or product it represents. In many ways, design is the voice of your brand — it can make or break perception at a glance.
